Energy infrastructure company Nevel is investing in new district heating production capacity in Bjuv and Åstorp, Sweden. The investment will secure long-term heat supply and strengthen the local energy infrastructure. A new biofuel-fired boiler will complement existing production and reduce the need for oil firing, while a new organic rankine cycle (ORC) plant will harness energy for fossil-free electricity production.
In order to secure long-term district heating supply and create a more robust energy system in Åstorp, Nevel is investing in a new biofuel-fired production unit with a heat output of 10 MW, supplemented by a flue gas condenser with a capacity of 1.7 MW. This means that more energy can be recovered from the fuel and improves the plant’s overall energy efficiency. The new production capacity roughly corresponds to the heating needs of 6,000 detached houses in Sweden.
The investment also includes a new ORC plant for electricity production. By harnessing energy that would otherwise not have been fully utilised, the plant will be able to produce up to 630 kW of fossil-free electricity. The electricity will be used both in Nevel’s own operations and to supply the regional power grid, further strengthening the energy supply in northwestern Skåne.
The new production capacity will also reduce the need for oil-fired boilers, which are only used during occasional peak demand periods, with the potential to reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions from production by around 500 tonnes per year. In addition, production will also be easier to control and the district heating system will be more robust. Both the production and operation of the district heating network will be automated.
In 2022, Nevel invested in a five-kilometre district heating pipeline that connects the district heating networks of Bjuv and Åstorp, making it possible to transfer fossil-free heat between the towns and creating a larger and more flexible district heating system.
In the period since the networks were first connected, the demand for district heating has increased significantly. To meet this growing demand and create space for further connections, the production capacity in Bjuv and Åstorp needs to be strengthened and upgraded. The new plant replaces part of the current production and creates a less complex and more efficient system.

To ensure that all requirements are met, extensive planning work was performed prior to the investment decision, including concept planning, a site review and sustainability and environmental assessments. Groundwork at the new site will begin in September 2026.
