Industrial excess heat becomes district heating – new climate-smart solution in Årjäng

Moelven Årjäng Såg AB and Nevel AB have announced a strategic partnership to optimise energy use in Årjäng by driving local material efficiency. The cooperation will, along with the new production facility enable reduction of fossil fuel use – 340 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The collaboration entails that Nevel can utilise excess heat from the sawmill’s processes, which reduces the need for external energy and strengthens the sustainability of production. Both Nevel and Moelven can also supply heat directly to each other. This ensures continuous operations during potential disruptions as well as extreme weather conditions, which previously required the use of oil. This step enables Nevel to further reduce its oil consumption and thereby reduce CO2 emissions. The collaboration brings together the efforts of local industry and utility infrastructure in the climate transition.

– Together with Moelven, we are taking responsibility for securing and making energy supply more efficient in a climate-smart way. This is positive for Nevel, Moelven and for the climate says Per Ander, Sales Manager, Nevel.

– When we needed to find new ways to make use of our excess heat, this option clearly stood out as the best. By using an existing connection, we can easily utilize the excess heat that the sawmill needs to get rid of in an efficient way, says Magnus Johannesson, CEO of Moelven Årjäng’s sawmill. In this way, we can provide energy equivalent to heating around 135 medium-sized households for a year.

In addition, there is now flexibility – both for us at Årjäng’s sawmill and for Nevel – as we now can deliver heat directly between each other, Magnus Johannesson concludes.

The collaboration is an important part of both Nevel’s and Moelven’s investments in sustainable energy and efficient resource use. By combining industrial surplus heat with Nevel’s district heating solutions, a robust and climate-smart system is created for the entire community in Årjäng.

The investments at Nevel Årjäng site include the construction of a new production plant, the relocation of pellet and oil boilers, the reconstruction of the pipeline network, and the demolition of the former boiler house at the sawmill.
