Nevel is firmly committed to building a responsible energy system for the future – hand in hand with our customers, employees and other stakeholders.
At Nevel, we see the climate challenge as an opportunity. With our sustainable energy systems and utility infrastructure ecosystems, we help to improve the quality of life in the communities where we operate and to help businesses achieve their energy and climate-related goals.
Our activities impact the wellbeing and lives of thousands of individuals, including customers, employees and suppliers. By working together with all our stakeholders, we can turn the climate challenge into a solid and sustainable platform for climate-positive growth.
Sustainability milestones in 2024
In 2024 we made significant progress on our climate-positive journey through electrification and material-efficiency solutions.
Here are key outcomes of our 2024 sustainability performance:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions with our largest investment to date in Sweden. The investment in our Årjäng production site will reduce annual CO2 emissions at the site by 310 tons and will also reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
- Electrification of energy production to increase flexibility and further reduce emissions. A new 14 MW electric boiler at our Forssa power plant is enabling CO2 emission reductions of around 1,200 tons, increasing the flexibility of energy production and strengthening security of supply for our customers.
- Displacement of fossil fuels through biogas production. Our biogas production plants help to decarbonise the energy system through the displacement of fossil fuels such as natural gas. In 2024, our biogas production of 38,360 MWh avoided 3,882 t CO2e emissions compared to conventional fossil energy sources.
- Increased understanding of our impacts throughout the value chain. We mapped our stakeholder groups to understand how they are impacted throughout the value chain, including the impacts of upstream activities, our own operations, and downstream impacts.
- Advancing our customers’ journey towards more sustainable energy production. As part of our collaboration with Atria in Finland, we invested in two 10 MW electric boilers and a 100 MWh heat accumulator at their Nurmo site, which will reduce the site’s annual CO2 emissions by as much as 5,800 tons. A new electric boiler and heat pump system at Fazer’s Lappeenranta site in Finland will reduce the site’s annual CO2 emissions by around 90%. Our collaboration with Puljonki at their Juuka factory in Finland, where we will provide industrial-scale refrigeration-as-a-service, supports their goal to achieve 100% renewable energy at the factory.
