Nevel Oy plans circular economy solutions in Kotka, Finland, in cooperation with Kymen Vesi, the city of Kotka and the Kotka-Hamina region development company Cursor. The goal is to build a biogas plant in Kotka, with an annual energy production capacity of approximately 22 GWh. The plant would enable the utilization of side streams from industrial production and the municipality in the energy value chain. The facility is scheduled to be operational during 2026. The construction of the facility would eventually employ dozens of professionals.
When implemented, the plant’s production process would enable the utilization of various inputs, such as sludge, from Kymen Vesi Oy and Kouvolan Vesi Oy. It is intended to produce biogas from sludge and other biodegradable fractions from industrial production and side streams from the city. The energy produced could be used as transport fuel and in industrial energy production. In addition, side streams can produce valuable side products, such as fertilizer and soil conditioners, which can be used in agriculture, for example.
The plant’s location is planned to be in the immediate vicinity of Kymen Vesi wastewater treatment plant in Palaslahti, Mussalo. The preliminary agreement between the city of Kotka and Nevel Oy regarding the leasing of the land begins in March, and an official decision has been made.
The Ministry of Labor and the Economy has granted an investment subsidy of 4.7 million euros to the project. The facility’s design follows strict environmental and safety standards. Before the final launch of the project, investment decisions are made and appropriate environmental and building permits are obtained.
