Biodegradable side stream processing supports Nevel’s strategy goals as a promoter of local circular economies.
Nevel operates the biogas productions plants in Forssa, Pori and Juuka, Finland. A new plant is planned to be built in Kotka starting production in 2026.
The biogas is produced from biowaste and sludge, and production serves about 50 industrial and municipal customers. Biogas production allows for almost full utilisation of organic waste generated by industry. This process not only cuts down on waste management costs but also significantly reduces emissions by replacing fossil fuels. The by-products generated at the biogas plant can be used as fertilizer for agricultural needs.
Biogas is a truly sustainable option, as biogas refined for transportation use (biomethane) is a low-emission fuel. The total carbon dioxide emissions of biogas are up to 90 percent lower than those of fossil fuels. Additionally, biogas is produced locally, which further enhances its sustainability.
Nevel operates two biogas refueling stations in Forssa and Pori, Finland. As a result of the purification process, 98 percent methane is piped to the refueling station, where it is stored in tanks. Purified biogas can also be packed into containers, which are used to transport biogas for industrial use or to refueling stations.
