Nordic Paper is a speciality paper producer with a local presence across Sweden, Norway and Canada. The company has operated in Åmotfors, Sweden, where it produces 56,000 tonnes of paper annually, since 1896.
Nevel and Nordic Paper began collaborating when Nevel took over the Åmotfors energy plant in Värmland’s Eda municipality in the autumn of 2022. The goal was to allow Nordic Paper to focus on its core business with the help of Nevel’s expertise in the operation, maintenance and secure supply of cost-effective energy.
The long-term, strategic partnership with Nevel has boosted Nordic Paper’s competitiveness, reducing the company’s climate impact and increasing safety for personnel.
Nevel had already recognised a great opportunity to leverage synergies to provide Nordic Paper with a more competitive energy supply. At the same time, it was clear that the goal would be realistic only if management practices were improved, business operations were streamlined and concrete metrics were established.
Through monthly and quarterly reviews, Nordic Paper and Nevel have been able to create a better, more focused system for follow-up and measuring progress.
Nevel’s Åmotfors plant produces steam, heat and electricity. While most of the energy is supplied to Nordic Paper’s kraft paper mill, part of it is directed to the local district heating network. Developing operations and ensuring availability of climate-smart energy not only improves Nordic Paper’s position but also the competitiveness of the local business community.
“We have found it valuable to bring in a partner for our energy supply with a strong focus on safety and sustainability. That is important in daily operations, but it also helps to reduce energy costs in the long term."

Since 2022, the two companies have worked towards ensuring a long-term, stable and price-competitive supply of energy, and their efforts have produced good results.
By investing in the modernisation of the energy plant and generating consistently high revenues from waste incineration, Nevel has been able to keep the energy price level stable. Nordic Paper has reduced its energy costs significantly since 2022.
Safety was one of the first priorities identified. Regular follow-ups and a focus on preventive work have contributed to the development of updated and more defined routines. What’s more, new protective clothing ensures a safe working environment.
“We are very happy to work with Nevel. The partnership has enhanced our business operations and improved safety at Åmotfors. Nordic Paper aims to reduce its climate impact, and in Nevel we have a partner who has the same objective. We have found it valuable to partner with a safety and sustainability expert with the ability to support our day-to-day operations and reduce our energy costs in the long term,” says Andersson.
It is always a balancing act to invest in restructuring business operations without risking steep price increases. To help them make well-founded and commercially viable decisions, the two companies decided to create a comprehensive energy mapping early in the process.
With their experience in helping other customers improve sustainability, Nevel knew that energy-intensive companies often have plenty of low-hanging fruit ripe for picking. The mapping helps to identify these efficiency opportunities, while the long-term plan can be developed gradually. The transition work, still in its infancy and expected to continue for several years, has already produced several initiatives aimed at reducing climate impact.
“We are happy to work with Nordic Paper and satisfied with how things have progressed so far. The collaboration is an excellent example of our ability to be a long-term partner and improve our customers’ competitiveness with tailored solutions. Entrusted with energy production, we manage the day-to-day operations and futureproofing of the plant. This has freed up time and resources for Nordic Paper,” says Fredrik Bjöörn, Head of Industrial Sales at Nevel.
