Progressing on our climate-positive journey with electrification and circular-economy solutions

Nevel’s 2024 sustainability report will be published later this spring, and our sustainability programme is detailed on our website. Here is a summary of the key takeaways from 2024.

1. Decarbonisation remains at the core of Nevel’s strategy

As Nevel progresses on its journey towards a climate-positive future, we continue to invest in and adopt new technologies, widen our mix of energy sources and build local circular economies that benefit society by turning industrial side streams into valuable energy sources. All these efforts lay the groundwork for a path towards decarbonisation and carbon neutrality.

2. Customer collaborations focused on emissions reductions

In 2024 Nevel continued to collaborate closely with customers on a number of different fronts. The company’s investments in electrification increased significantly, and these will make a significant positive contribution to reductions in CO2 emissions across all our business areas in the coming years. The expansion of Nevel’s collaborations with Atria and Fazer in Finland, are two examples of such investments.

Nevel continues to be committed to achieving Scope 1 carbon-neutral energy production in its Real Estate solutions business by 2030 and transforming its industrial customers energy supply chain by 2035.

3. Security of supply for a just transition

Nevel took several measures to adapt to the changing and challenging circumstances faced in 2024. These circumstances included the effects of the energy crisis and the general global economic situation, high overall fuel costs and the impact of harsh weather conditions during the early part of the year.

To enable a just transition in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 – Affordable and clean energy, taking into consideration social, economic and environmental perspectives – Nevel’s focus in 2024 remained on ensuring security of supply in energy production and distribution. To enable this required a higher-than-planned use of both peat and reserve oil. As a result, during 2024 Nevel’s total Scope 1 CO2 emissions intensity per unit of sold energy increased compared to 2023.

The company’s efforts during the year were focused on supply-chain management, enhancement of and investment in circular economies, widening of the fuel mix and energy sources – including new technologies such as electrification – and close collaboration with customers.

One key example of the measures that Nevel is taking to ensure security of supply is the investment in the company’s Årjäng production site in Sweden. This investment, Nevel’s largest in the country to date, strengthens operational reliability and production capacity at the site as well as provides major environmental benefits.

4. Sustainability efforts with the circular economy as a cornerstone

During 2024 Nevel implemented several initiatives to support sustainable energy production and improve material circularity. These include upgrading the company’s own utility infrastructure to support its sustainability mission and meet increasingly demanding environmental and legislative requirements. Nevel also implemented new material circularity solutions to enhance the capacity and availability of biogas for its customers.

5. Creating a healthy and safe working environment for all

Nevel remains committed to building a healthy and safe working environment with a zero-injury principle. The company has implemented several corrective actions targeted at reducing safety-related incidents and improved its performance with regard to preventive safety measures. Safety remains Nevel’s number one priority, and the company is continuing its efforts to implement a preventive approach to safety with all its subcontractors.

We would like to thank all our customers and stakeholders for their contribution to the achievements realised during 2024 and to our ongoing efforts to achieve climate-positive growth.
